You can see for yourself just how close the various Butner institutions identified in the column are to the Umstead Research Farm, proposed site of the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility (NBAF).

Go to Google Maps and type in this address: Dillon Drive, Butner, NC 27509. Click "Search Maps."

If a map comes up on your screen, click "Satellite View" and check the box for "Show Labels."

At the center of the satellite view is the C.A. Dillon Youth Development Academy, which borders the proposed NBAF, which would be built just east (to the right) of C.A. Dillon.

On the left side of the screen is the eastern edge of the huge Federal Correctional Complex. If you zoom out just one click you can see more of that property.

At the bottom center of that screen is Polk Correctional Institution.

This satellite photo was taken before construction of the new Central Regional Hospital, but you can see its current location. The patch of clouds in the photo is conveniently located over the current Umstead Research Farm. Directly south (below) you can see an opening in the woods north of (above) Veasey Road. That opening is now part of The Central Regional Hospital site, which spans entrances on Veasey Road and Central Avenue.

South of (below) Veasey Road, on L Street, is the future location of Our Children's Place.

Zoom out one more click and you can see the massive Federal Correctional Complex. Also within that view is the Unstead Correctional Center, which is at the bottom edge of the screen, south-southeast of Polk Correctional Institution.

Zooming out one more click will bring the Murdoch Developmental Center into view, due east of the Umstead Research Farm site, on the western side of 33rd Street.

Note that the scale in the lower-left corner of this satellite image now shows 1 mile and 1 kilometer (1000 meters). The site-specific risk analysis of the Draft Environmental Impact Statement informed, "Within 3 km [kilometers] of the proposed site are significant areas of industrial and residential development." Using the scale provided on the screen, you can see that all of the Butner institutions Homeland Security ignored, as well as two that were mentioned, are also within 3 kilometers of the boundaries of the Umstead Research Farm site.
