The City of Durham raked in close to $13.7 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act in 2009, according to the City Manager's office.
Assistant to the City Manager Karmisha Wallace presented the figures in a Dec. 21 memo to the City Council. Wallace also reported that the city has applied for $177,290,100 through competitive ARRA programs.
Of the 2009 receipts, $12,490,116 were through "formula funding," allocated according to an established demographic-based method; and $1,174,497 through competitions with other local governments around the United States.
So far, the city has spent $2.5 million of its "stimulus" receipts, providing for 270 jobs retained, filled or created including the summer youth work program.
The Public Works Department was the most stimulated city agency, getting $6.9 million (numbers are rounded) for tasks including:
Sidewalks on six major streets;
Resurfacing the American Tobacco and North-South trails;
Rebuilding the Miami Boulevard/Geer Street intersection;
Building the Third Fork Creek Trail;
Installing new stoplights.
The City Manager's office got $2.2 million for energy-saving measures. Workforce Development received $1.3 million worth of stimulation for training and wages. Community Development took in another $1.3 million for housing rehabilitation and preventing homelessness. The Police Department got $1.5 million, including a $724,497 competitive grant from the U.S. Justice Department.
