Durham Parks and Recreation will hold a cheerleading class at 6 p.m. for ages 6-17 at Holton Career and Resource Center, 401 N. Driver St. This class will teach the sport of cheerleading, as well as conflict resolution, confidence, and discipline. For more information, call 354-2750.

The American Indian Club at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics will host its 19th annual American Indian Powwow from 1 to 5 p.m. and in the evening from 6:30 to 9 p.m. American Indians from North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia will be in attendance. The event will feature music, dance, arts, crafts and food. It will be held in the Charles R. Eilber Physical Education Center on NCSSM's campus.
The event is open to the public. There will be a $5 admission fee accepted at the door, good for the entire day, and children ages 5 and under will be admitted for free. For additional information on the powwow, visit www.ncssm.edu/powwow.
Tarp Day, a free community event benefiting area pickup truck owners, will be held from 10 a.m. to noon at Northgate Mall, 1058 W. Club Blvd., next to Chick-fil-a. Five hundred complimentary tarps (truck bed covers) will be distributed to truck owners as part of a special giveaway on a first-come, first-served basis.
Durham Parks and Recreation will hold "Solar Solutions for your Home," an interactive workshop with local experts and agencies, from 10:30 a.m. to noon at Holton Career and Resource Center, 401 N. Driver St.

Durham Parks and Recreation will host the Durham Senior Games and SilverArts competition from April 17 to May 1. Mature adults ages 55 and older will display their athletic and artistic abilities in a variety of Olympic-style events. Interested adults can register from Feb. 1 through April 2 to participate. The North Regional Library will hold its Chess Club meetings each Saturday from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Any age or skill level is invited to participate. Sets and boards are provided.
Durham Parks and Recreation is currently seeking residents to serve on its Mature Adults Advisory Board. The purpose of the board is to help DPR plan and advocate for the recreation needs of adults. Interested persons must be willing to serve on the board for two years. The application deadline is Friday, Feb. 5. Durham Parks and Recreation is sponsoring a Diabetes Walking Club on Thursdays from 3 to 4 p.m. at I.R. Holmes Sr. Recreation Center at Campus Hills, 2000 S. Alston Ave. This is a free walking club for people who want to manage their diabetes or learn more about diabetes prevention.
Durham residents interested in giving their input directly to the Durham City Council on the city's 2010-2011 fiscal year budget should mark their calendars now to attend one of the "Coffee with Council" community meetings to be held throughout February and March.

North Carolina Central University will celebrate Black History Month in its Centennial Year with a series of events that are free and open to the public.
Dr. Ben Carson, director of Pediatric Neurosurgery, The Johns Hopkins Hospital, will speak from his book, "Think Big: Unleashing Your Potential for Excellence" on Tuesday, Feb. 9, at 3 p.m. in the McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium.
The stage comedy "Dance on Widow's Row" by Samm-Art Williams will open at the University Theatre Friday, Feb. 12, at 8 p.m. NCCU students will lend their talents to this production.
Glenn Harris, associate professor at UNC-Wilmington, will address this year's theme, "The History of Black Economic Empowerment," on Monday, Feb. 15, at 3 p.m. in the H.M. Michaux Jr. School of Education Auditorium.
Durham Parks and Recreation will hold Bingo and Breakfast on Fridays from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. at W.I. Patterson Neighborhood Center, 2614 Crest St. There will be prizes, laughter and a snack.
