I read Debbie Meyer's article about the wildlife education provided by the Piedmont Wildlife Center with interest (DN Feb. 3), but I do wonder if many of the readers realize that PWC no longer maintains a facility to treat injured and orphaned wild animals, which was originally their primary mission.
The PWC hospital was formed when the APS of Chapel Hill closed its wildlife hospital, and after six years, PWC closed its clinic to concentrate on wildlife education. In July of 2009, the Triangle Wildlife Rehabilitation Clinic (TWRC) opened to fill that void, and this hospital, along with Wildlife Welfare Inc. of Wake County and its home rehabilitators are now handling most of the wildlife emergencies.
TWRC is totally dependent on donations from the public to keep its doors open. If you have a native wild animal that needs care, please contact TWRC at 544-3330. The Web site is
trianglewildlife.org, and donations are gratefully accepted.
