I was pleased to see Philip Van Lidth De Jeude's guest column "Let's not let pledge divide 'one nation'" (DN July 7).
As the leader of the Ethical Humanist Society of the Triangle, one of the sponsoring groups of the "One Nation Indivisible" billboards, this is exactly the type of reasoned, understanding response that I hoped that the billboards would elicit.
It is time to recognize that we are a nation of many religions and of no religion. The U.S. Constitution is a secular document that guarantees freedom of religious expression, protection of religions from government interference, and freedom from discrimination based on one's beliefs.
"One Nation Indivisible" establishes an inclusive position that believers and non-believers can both respect and support. As Thomas Jefferson said, "But it does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods or no God. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg."
