DURHAM - An ex-Durham firefighter charged with robbing eight stores in six weeks was released from Duke Hospital on Tuesday after he tried to kill himself in the Durham County jail last Wednesday, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Damon Antonio Quick, who turned 36 on Tuesday, was transferred into a state-run medical facility after his condition improved enough to allow the move. He will remain there indefinitely.

Quick faces 43 charges connected with the robberies, including second-degree kidnapping and robbery with a dangerous weapon.

Quick was arrested June 12 at the Dollar Tree at 3823 Guess Road following a long-term investigation by the Police Department, the Durham County Sheriff’s Office and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

In every case, the robber wore a Green Goblin mask. The Green Goblin is a villain from the Spiderman comic books and movies.

Quick is scheduled to appear in district court on July 5.
