Durham Public Schools students will have at least one more month to enjoy sweets at school parties.

The Board of Education is considering changes to the six-year-old wellness policy that would eliminate sweets such as candy, cupcakes and pies at parties as rewards.

The board was to vote on the changes Thursday night, but because board members had not had time to consider ongoing changes that Chairwoman Heidi Carter had been making, the board decided to delay the vote until its next meeting, Sept. 27.

Board member Fredrick A. Davis said Thursday night that he would vote against changes cutting sweets out of parties.

“We can have our parties then,” Davis said, after the vote was delayed.

Changes also would require at least three healthy options at concession stands at after-school events.
