DURHAM - The Durham County ABC Board responded Monday to a draft state performance audit that criticized its operating costs and record-keeping.

“The organization had already made proactive changes addressing some of the points made in the draft report prior to our May 2012 audit that are already having a positive impact on our performance overall and as measured against the Commission’s standards,” Durham Board Chairwoman Kimberly Shaw said in a prepared statement.

A 2010 legislative act required performance audits of all local boards in North Carolina to make sure they meet established standards. The performance audit is not related to an ongoing Alcohol Law Enforcement investigation of the Durham County ABC over possible violations of state law and other improprieties.

Durham’s draft audit, released last week, found its costs were higher than other boards having similar business volumes. It also found receipts were missing for some credit-card transactions.

In her statement, Shaw said the Durham ABC Board “is addressing each of the recommendations made in the draft report and we are pleased that in most instances Durham County ABC is performing satisfactorily.”

Durham has until Oct. 28 to make its full response to the draft report to the state Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission.
