Scenes from the N.C. Pride Parade
"Homosexuality is no different from any other sin," says Dean Padgett of Stem, wheeling a cross down Ninth Street during the N.C. Pride Parade. "I hear homosexuals say they were born that way. I'm not opposed to that. If we were born in sin we have to be born again."

Jordan Scurlock, 17, of Durham, (front) and Tyler McLamb, 21, of New Bern (left) dance down Ninth Street with the Bulltown Strutters during the N.C. Pride Parade Saturday.

"Nags Head born, Raleigh bred" Katie Evans, 30, carries the flag of the Human Rights Campaign-North Carolina down Broad Street during Saturday's N.C. Pride Parade in Durham.

A police officer separates Donna Mitchell, 40, of Smithfield, (in striped shirt, left) from a member of Open Door Baptist Church of Easley, N.C., who declined to give his name during Saturday's annual Gay Pride March in Durham. "I'm a Christian. They're judging, and it's wrong," Mitchell says. "God loves us all. It doesn't matter what you are."

Thousands turned out despite off-and-on rain Saturday for the annual N.C. Pride Parade in Durham.

The event featured political speeches, including a keynote by Chapel Hill Mayor Mark Kleinschmidt, church, school and civic group floats, a handful of preachers protesting and a man dressed like Jesus wheeling a cross through the crowd.

A Marilyn Monroe drag queen on stilits led the procession down Main Street as it headed down Broad and back on Ninth Street.

Here are a few scenes from the event. You can see more under the Local News photo galleries at newsobserver.com
