DURHAM - A high school student in Durham was arrested Monday after sheriff’s deputies say he brought a loaded pistol onto school grounds.
Kelvin Thomas Owens, of 4 Savi Court, was arrested around 9 a.m. following an investigation by a sheriff’s deputy assigned as the school resource officer at Hillside High School. No one was hurt and school continued uninterrupted during the investigation.
Owens was observed by a sheriff’s deputy off campus with a group of other men acting suspiciously Monday morning, according to Paul Sherwin, spokesman for the Durham County Sheriff’s Office. When he returned to campus a short time later, he smelled of marijuana and was searched by school administrators and deputies. During the search, deputies found a loaded .45 caliber pistol.
He was arrested around 9 a.m. and has been charged with possession of a firearm on educational property. He is being held in the Durham County Jail under a $5,000 bail. Owens is also on probation for a Sept. 19 conviction of breaking and entering into a vehicle and larceny.
