DURHAM - A Wednesday night fire damaged the popular Parker and Otis restaurant and food store on South Duke Street. There were no injuries.

Interim Fire Chief Dan Curia said the fire marshal had not pinpointed the cause as of 9:15 a.m. Thursday, and he did not yet have an estimate of the damage.

Curia said firefighters were alerted at 7:46 p.m. Wednesday by an automatic fire alarm. When they arrived four minutes later they saw fire through a window and called for assistance.

Inside, they found a small fire on the first floor that had activated an automatic sprinkler system, Curia said. Twenty-eight firefighters responded and were at the scene for two hours and 41 minutes, he said.

The restaurant had been closed for the holidays since Monday and was not scheduled to reopen until after New Year’s.
