“One Bad Cat: The Work Of Reverend Albert Wagner” will be displayed at Durham’s Outsider’s Art & Collectibles gallery Feb. 16-March 16.

Wagner is a well-known figure in folk art circles, meaning that he is all but unknown elsewhere. A resident of Cleveland, Wagner painted fauvist scenes with strong religious and African-American themes.

An “outsider” artist par excellence, Wagner created works of sprititual, artistic and cultural significance until his death at age 82. His life was transformed by his art, and he was the subject of a 2008 documentary in which he claimed to talk with God and said that a religious conversion had inspired him to paint. He was father of 20 children, a minister, and a prolific painter. When he died in 2006, his obituary ran in the Las Angeles Times; the New York Times called him “Moses of East Cleveland.”

The pieces are from the private collection of Missy and Wesley Cochran of LaGrange, Ga. An opening reception will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday. A performance by the Mount Vernon Baptist Church Choir will commence at 6:30 p.m..
