DURHAM - A Durham County sheriff’s deputy’s car collided with another car Tuesday afternoon while the deputy was responding to a crash on Interstate 85.
The deputy, George Chappell, was not hurt
The woman who collided with him was taken to a hospital with an injured ankle. Her name and condition have not been released.
The collision occurred at 1:05 p.m. at Page Road and T.W. Alexander Drive. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.
According to Sheriff’s Office spokesman Paul Sherwin, the deputy was responding to the crash of a vehicle being pursued by Granville County deputies.
He was traveling north on Page Road with lights and siren on when he stopped for a red light at the intersection and checked for oncoming traffic. He was proceeding through when he was struck on the driver’s side by a vehicle going east on T.W Alexander. The driver had the green light but did not see the deputy in time to stop, according to Sherwin.
Durham County deputies had been dispatched at 12:59 p.m. to assist the Granville deputies in pursuit of a southbound vehicle, which crashed into a guardrail between Redwood Road and Red Mill Road. Southbound traffic was obstructed for about two hours.
