DURHAM — A Durham man was killed Wednesday when a vehicle turned in front his scooter on University Drive.
Joshua Johnson, 33, was riding south on University Drive around 2 p.m. when a 1996 Dodge driven northbound by James Byrd, of Alpine Road, attempted to make a left turn onto Durham-Chapel Hill Boulevard. The scooter collided with the side of the Dodge, according to investigators.
Johnson was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
Byrd, who was not injured, was charged Thursday with failure to yield right of way and misdemeanor death by vehicle.
