DKG awards grants

In December, members of four local chapters of Delta Kappa Gamma, an international society of women educators, presented $200 “Kick-Off Career” teacher grants to nine beginning teachers in the Durham Public Schools and Person County Schools. Awarded annually to classroom teachers in their first, second or third year of teaching, these grants are used to purchase instructional resources and implement curricular projects. This year, the grants will help fund projects that include creating classroom libraries; adding music, art and technology resources; and repairing a campus erosion problem by environmental science students.

Recipients from Durham Public Schools were Corinne Huber and Shai Cullop of Brogden Middle, Hank Samuels of Burton Magnet Elementary, Joann McAdon of Little River Elementary, Blakely Lord of Southern High School of Engineering, and Julie Ann Dale of Sandy Ridge Elementary Magnet.

Kiwanis meet

Master Gardener, Pierre Gervais was the speaker at the Jan. 29 meeting of the Tobaccoland Kiwanis Club of Durham. His talk included a discussion of the Durham County Master Gardener program, the maintenance of residential lawns and responded to numerous questions from club members about lawn issues, plants and shrubs.
