Billerman, Thompson shine in NCCU scrimmage

Local football fans got a first look last weekend at former Ravenscroft quarterback Quinn Billerman, who made his debut as an Eagle in N.C. Central’s annual spring football game.

A junior transfer from New Mexico Military Institute, Billerman completed 14 of 22 passes for 150 yards — including two TDs thrown to all-MEAC wide receive Adrian Wilkins — with one interception.

Billerman was the first player signed by first-year NCCU coach Jerry Mack. He is the son of former Duke basketball guard Kevin Billerman, who serves as head basketball coach at Ravenscroft.

In three seasons at Ravenscroft, Billerman became the Ravens’ all-time leading passer with 6,152 yards and 62 touchdown passes from 2009-11. At NMMI, the 6-3, 215 pound quarterback set single-season passing standards with 2,962 yards and 34 touchdowns in 2013, capped by MVP honors in leading the broncos to victory in the El Toro Bowl.

Last Saturday’s game also featured sophomore linebacker Jeremy Thompson, an alumnus of Southern High School, making five tackles for the Maroon defense.

The game was played as offense versus defense. The Gray offensive team scored three touchdowns, kicked two field goals and three extra points, and moved the chains 14 times to amass 41 points. The Maroon team made eight stops, including an interception and a 3-and-out to tally 34 points, while also adding 13 tackles for a loss with six sacks.
