Three Durham citizens were recently given the 2014 N.C. Jaycees Distinguished Service Awards. Travis Melvin (left) received the Outstanding Public Servant award; Betsy Vatavuk (middle) received the Outstanding Senior Citizen award; and Dr. Jamie Lathan received the Outstanding Educator award.

• Durham residents Gabrielle McArdle and Juan Razo have been selected as Ronald McDonald House Scholars. The RMHC scholarship recipients were chosen based on their leadership skills, academic success, community involvement, financial need and a personal essay describing how they intend to make a difference in society.

• The following Durham students graduated from the University of North Carolina in Asheville in May: Caitlin Riane Connelly, Jaimie Mollie Dorfman, Nicholas James Faught, Patrick Edmund Frame, Abby Elizabeth Harris, Nathan Craig Hoffmeier, Brennen Renee Hubbard, Enrica Monique McMillan, Betsy Kapiko Morris, Benjamin Michael Morton and Zevi Geller Ryan.

• A group of women graduating from the Durham Rescue Mission’s recovery program recently visited the governor’s mansion after completing a year-long program designed to help conquer addictions, abusive relationships, homelessness and other trials.
