Strange Beauty

This is the fifth year of the Strange Beauty Film Festival, June 12-14, at Manbites Dog Theater, created and curated by Jim Haverkamp and Joyce Ventimiglia.

I have shown something every year (except for last year – we got sleeted out! It was in January) and every year it has been just about the best screening of the year for me. Compared to outdoor shows, it is a real treat to have both real darkness in the room and more focused attention of the audience.

I will be showing a new short piece “Curved Shadow” on Friday. I can’t really call it “a film” because it is a projector performance, utilizing two 16 mm projectors but only one screen. Like much of my work in recent years, I am re-purposing some of my older films – in this case, “Curved Object with a Straight Shadow” and “Full Frame Three” – along with other material, including glimpses of early cinema and single shots from Hollywood movies. This is a buzzy flicker film, with music by Ligeti and Swans.

Give Strange Beauty a try. Get your tickets in advance, though; it usually sells out.
