Durham gets an introductory peek at its newest park Saturday, May 3, as Leigh Farm Park in southwest Durham hosts Festival for Wildlife, which includes music, games and crafts.
The kid-friendly event from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. is put on by the Piedmont Wildlife Center, which is celebrating its fifth year. Live music will be played by Steep Canyon Rangers, Big Fat Gap and Cyril Lance. Hands-on activities for families, educational tours and storytellers are scheduled.
Plans for the 89-acre park at 364 Leigh Farm Road include an 18-hole disc golf course, three buildings for the Piedmont Wildlife Center and a historic garden of heirloom flowers. The antebellum-era farmhouse on the grounds has nine outbuildings and a family graveyard. Plans call for the park to be fully operational by 2010.
Piedmont Wildlife Center is a nonprofit organization that nurtures native North American wildlife through rehabilitation, education and scientific study. Partners for the first-time event are Durham Parks and Recreation, Durham and Orange Recreational Disc Golf Association, New Hope Creek Corridor Advisory Committee and S.E.E.D.S., a nonprofit community gardening coalition.
