Raleigh-Durham airport is holding an open house today, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., to show off its new terminal.

The $570-million Terminal 2 (presently, the airport has a Terminal 1 and a Terminal 3, but no Terminal 2; the original Terminal 2 is now part of Terminal 1 -- a long story) is supposed to open Oct. 26, with a second section opening in 2011 assuming airlines are still in business then.

Parking is free(!) for today's event, and the new terminal's 26 retailers and restaurants are giving away samples -- including coffee and wine -- while profits from $3 sandwich-chips-drink meals go to benefit the USO.

Transportation Security Administration officials will be there to talk about security, and airline spokespersons to promote their services. Maybe they'll explain what they did with your luggage.

Fun, games, crafts

The Durham Craft Market, an outdoor emporium that operates Saturday mornings across Foster Street from the Durham Farmers' Market, is holding a "Family Fun Day" Oct. 25.

Craftspeople are going to be demonstrating how they do what they do and patrons can try it themselves, while entertainers entertain and kids play games and, it may be hoped, some jewelry and pots and woodwork are sold.

Wool E. Bull is even due to be on hand, now that baseball season is over.

Audits at a discount

The Cooperative Extension Service is offering home-energy audits for $100 in Durham County. The audits, according to Durham County spokeswoman Dawn Dudley, are worth $500, and the discount version does come with some conditions regarding the house in question:

* no bigger than 2,000 square feet;

* only one HVAC system;

* 5 years old or older.

And homeowners, who have to:

* Present a copy of their latest utility bills and

* an average of their last two years' utility bills.

Homeowners have to be on hand for the audit, which takes two to four hours.

Classy fixups

Furniture by Lowell, a restoration company, has moved to Durham from Newport News, Va., and taken quarters at 1601 E. Geer St. -- if you're headed out of town, that's on the left, right past the U.S. 70 underpass.

According to the firm's Web site (which plays loud violin music when you open the home page), Lowell offers refinishing, reupholstering, repairs, inlays and more -- and has "been privileged to service Colonial Williamsburg for over 25 years."

Now open

The new CVS drugstore at 5311 N. Roxboro Road (Infinity/Roxboro intersection) opened last weekend, replacing the miniature Eckerd's that used to be near the same location. Among the items on special: a Jumbo Universal Remote, big enough to double as a cutting board, for $9.99, and Halloween paraphernalia marked down already.
