For the 44 young ladies being presented at the Debutante Cotillion and Christmas Ball, the busy scene backstage at the Durham Marriott at The Civic Center was opposite the elegantly decorated banquet hall full of family and society leaders ready to receive them. Practicing the waltz, synchronizing group curtsies and beaming for endless photo-ops, graceful and well-mannered debutantes found different ways to burn up nervous energy before making their formal bow to society. Caroline Reeves, 18, and a freshman at Appalachian State, tried her "irreverent" best to elicit some laughs by blowing bubbles and wearing red cowboy boots under her snow-white dress. Admitting to being a "devil child" in Catholic school and a bit rebellious when it comes to high-class functions, she's nonetheless found Debutante Society to be fun and rewarding. "All the members have been wonderful. And if someone asked me today if they should join if asked, I wouldn't hesitate to tell them 'Yes, definitely.' It's really worthwhile." When asked what she's learned from the experience, she can't help but let go one last bit of playfulness. "The three-step waltz. And my left from my right, for sure."
