| Daniel Hudgins, 18, a senior at Durham School of the Arts, practices stick control and rudiments while hanging out on the deck at Fowler.s before the start of the school day. A member of the school's percussion ensemble, he plays the snare drum and xylophone. When called upon he can play piano as well. With his drum pad and sticks attached to his hip, he's able to jam any time, anywhere and he usually does. "Percussion's my favorite. So I don't need much of a reason [to practice]. But usually whenever I'm bored. Which, really, is a lot. ... Ahh, welcome to Durham," he said. Hopefully, all that boredom will help cultivate the skills that could snare him his next goal: acceptance into the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston.
