| Art or vandalism? Once considered solely the latter, the idea of graffiti as art is slowly migrating into the mainstream and galleries. As proof, some hip Fortune 500 companies now hire graffiti artists to create outdoor ads in unconventional places. Aspiring artists acquiring their apprenticeships at SeeSaw Studio, like Laura Madejczyk, 15, who's also studying media and design at the Durham School of the Arts, are learning that graffiti, even in the abstract, can be appreciated. Under the tutelage of former UNC art professor James Gadson, the group is painting a collaborative mural on the back side of the studio building in different languages where the universal culinary question "May I take your plate?" is the theme. To the casual passerby, the meaning of the piece may not be clear, but Gadson confidently passes along the wisdom that sometimes the meaning is found in the response to the art and not so much the art itself.
