Springtime. Flowers bloom fresh with life breathed into once dormant spaces. A new cycle. A time to begin again. And so it can also be said of Josefina Tiryakian's creative spirit. Studying the soft clusters of fine fragrant petals of the shrub fothergilla, it was the first time she was attempting to draw the world around her authentically in graphite and watercolor. Originally an oil painter dabbling in the abstract back in college, she enrolled in a weeklong workshop on botanical illustration, its history and technique at the Doris Duke Center at Duke Gardens, hoping to be challenged. And challenged she was. 'It's been very difficult. But I've enjoyed the challenge,' she said. 'You learn to see differently. I love it.' |
