| Coming 'Round the Mountain," Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" -- two standards finally sharing the same stage. Well at least for Faye Hester, left, and Estella Dixon. Plugged into electronic keyboards, the women tickle plastic ivories of their own musical tastes and talent level in silent harmony. That is until music teacher Leon Goldston Jr. gently taps one on the shoulder and off come the headphones: the tinkling of notes from one song or another then emanating through the beginning piano class for seniors at the Lyon Park recreation center. Dixon, 73, and Hester, somewhere in her sixties, along with eight other students were preparing for the Senior Spotlight Spring Concert at the N.C. School of Science and Mathematics on June 1. Both always wanted to play piano since childhood, but a lifetime of raising families and working left them with little time to pursue their musical interest. Now they hope to inspire family and friends and finally put their home pianos to good use. |
