| Does size matter? Dr. Ramesh Mathur, left, a materials engineering professor at St. Augustine's College in Raleigh, and his Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics class at N.C. Central University are trying to prove that it doesn't. At least in the statistical correlation between head size and intelligence. After Cameron Parrish, 16, a rising junior from Elkin, beat Mathur 115-106 in a game of connect-the-dots, they measured the height of each other's heads from chin to top. Parrish had the good doctor beaten there, too. But only by an inch -- 8.5 versus 7.5. The numbers, albeit unscientifically attained, aren't enough to prove any relationship between head size and IQ. But Mathur made sure his class knew there is one factor in statistics where size is important: the amount of samples taken. So for Parrish, this first match was just the beginning. |
