| As Jessica Dockery kneads bread in preparation for lunch, memories of a bygone era swirl aromatically from the farmhouse kitchen of the historic Bennett Place, welcoming visitors and inviting them back to 19th-century Durham. Dressed in period clothing and demonstrating the skills and crafts of that age, Dockery and Mia Berg -- by fire -- stay true to the details of life during the Civil War era. The Bennett Place was the site of the largest Confederate troop surrender of the Civil War, when Gen. Joseph E. Johnston surrendered to Gen. William T. Sherman. Now it's one of three North Carolina Historic Sites in Durham County, and on Dec. 3 it will be demonstrating a Victorian Christmas in full costume.
