| Paula Sukenik, left, and her daughter Katie Plichta, right, both of Raleigh, take on the walls at The Vertical Edge Climbing Center in Durham on Tuesday evening. Plichta was to begin classes this past Wednesday at N.C. State University, where she is a junior, and called her mother to see about spending the day together before her school year began. It has been about seven years since the two had been climbing together. "We used to go every Wednesday and we loved it," Sukenik said. But various life circumstances intervened to keep them from climbing, including Sukenik's treatment for leukemia in March of 2005. "I've got most of my strength back. I still feel it in my legs and arms," she said. This is just the second time since her treatment that she has been climbing. "We both had fun. And it's good exercise. I loved it," she added. |
