| Kim Walsh, who lives in Orange County, likes to take Thursdays to come over to Claymakers at 705 Foster Street in Durham for a Beginners' Wheel class. Although she has been working on the wheel off and on for about five years, she says, "I'll probably always be a beginner, but I'm not a novice. At this point I can do bowls and plates. I need to learn how to do pitchers and vases." Despite having two school-age kids and working part time, she manages to carve out time to attend this class and keep working with the clay. Her philosophy? "It really is just dirt. You push it around. It pushes back. You spend maybe 20 minutes on a piece and it falls apart. It's OK. It's just dirt. You recenter the clay, but you are also recentering yourself." |
