Durham County Library is hosting a job fair from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the East Regional Library, 211 Lick Creek Lane. More than 20 area companies are slated to attend, and more are being added. All participating employers have current openings.

A Prayer Vigil to honor the life of Jessica George will be held at 6 p.m.at the Community Garden located at the intersection of Wilkerson and Rome avenues. The vigil will be led by the Rev. Abby Kocher, Duke University Chapel's Minister to the Community. All faiths and ages are welcome.

Nov. 5

Matt and Ted Lee will discuss and sign copies of their new book "The Lee Bros. Simple Fresh Southern: Knockout Dishes with Down-Home Flavor" at 7 p.m. at the Regulator Bookshop, 720 Ninth St.

The Adolescent Health Initiative (AHI) invites Durham adolescents ages 10 to 24 and their trusted guardians to share stories about their health-care needs and make recommendations about what services and approaches will work for them from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hayti Heritage Center, 804 Old Fayetteville St. Youth, parents, coaches, mentors, and other concerned adults are invited to participate. Dinner will be provided to all participants, and there will be a variety of door prizes. Please RSVP to 768-3088.

The Greater Durham Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with Durham Public Schools, will host the Fourth Annual Career EXPO for middle school students and their parents/guardians from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at Northgate Mall. This event is free for all attendees.

During Duke Arts Weekend Nov. 6 and 7, student artwork will be on display in a public exhibit throughout Duke University's Bryan Center and plaza. In addition, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 5, the Mary Lou Williams Center will present "Through the Night," a one-man play by Def Jam poet and playwright Daniel Beaty. The play, to be performed in the Bryan Center's Reynolds Theater, explores black stereotypes through the eyes of six black men. A question-and-answer session and reception will follow the free performance.

Sarah P. Duke Gardens, 426 Anderson St., will hold "Walk on the Wild Side" with Stefan Bloodworth, curator of the Blomquist Garden of Native Plants, at 11 a.m. Join Bloodworth on the first Thursday of every month to see which plants are in bloom, learn strategies to design with native plants, and discuss regional ecology. Participants should meet at the Blomquist Gate house for this one-hour discussion/walk. To register, call 668-1707.

Nov. 6

Durham Parks and Recreation will hold "Nature Night for Kids" from 6 to 9 p.m. at West Point on the Eno Park, 5101 N. Roxboro Road. Young people will explore the park at night, play some nature games, and participate in other fun activities. For children ages 5 to 9. Limited space available. Cost is $10 per child. Call 471-1623 to register.

Veterans, their families and friends are invited to our third annual Salute to Veterans at 10 a.m. at the Durham Center for Senior Life, 406 Rigsbee Ave. This year the program will focus on the Marine Corps, with a special honor to the African-American Marines who trained at Mortford Point, N.C., in the 1940s. The Wind Symphony of the Durham School of the Arts will perform patriotic music. The Council will also be holding a screening of the documentary "The Marines of Montford Point: Fighting for Freedom." There is no admission, but the Council is requesting a donation of a non-perishable item for its food pantry.

Nov. 7

Durham will host a Landlord Training Workshop from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at City Hall, 101 City Hall Plaza. The workshop is specifically designed to assist landlords, property managers, resident managers, and any others who are actively involved in managing rental housing. Seating is limited, so interested participants must register by Friday, Oct. 30. The cost to attend this one-day workshop is $30 per person. Refreshments and lunch will be provided. Durham Parks and Recreation will sponsor "Discovering Deer" from 10 a.m. to noon at West Point on the Eno Park, 5101 N. Roxboro Road. We'll look for evidence of deer throughout the park and talk about how deer survive in an urban area.

The grand opening of the city skate park will be held from noon to 4:30 p.m. at 502 Foster St. The ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at noon and will culminate with demos by the Toy Machine Skateboard Team. The celebration will continue with performances by local bands, giveaways and plenty of fun. This event is an official Troika Music Festival site ( www.troikamusicfestival.org) and is supported by the Ujamaa Boardhouse and Durham Central Park.
