Habitat of Durham has a number of public events on the calendar during December, beginning today with Habitat Day at the Great Outdoor Provision Co. at Northgate Mall. The company will donate 5 percent of today's sales to Habitat affiliates across the state, and the first 200 customers who donate $10 to Habitat will receive an "Irresistible Scarf" from ExOfficio.

* Students in the Construction and Architectural Design Academy at Southern High School have manufactured and packaged birdhouse kits, complete with building instructions and nails.

Proceeds from the sale of these kits will fund this year's Youth United home to be built in partnership with Durham's youth and the McRae family. Birdhouse kits and/or decorated birdhouses are available for holiday gifts and can be ordered by calling 919-682-0516, ext. 113. Suggested donation is $20 per kit or assembled birdhouse.

Youth United is a nationwide Habitat initiative that involves people ages 5 to 25 to fund and build Habitat houses. They are now seeking supporters.

Youth and adults interested in learning more about Youth United are invited to a meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, at First Presbyterian Church, 305 E. Main St.

* The Habitat Hand-Me-Up Store is holding a building materials warehouse sale on Saturday, Dec. 13, at 1400 E. Geer St.

Merchandise on sale will include laminate flooring, windows, doors, sinks and commodes. The warehouse is open only on the sale date.
