The Durham Jaycees are conducting their 37th annual haunted house this week at the American Tobacco Campus' Crowe Building.
The haunted house, located in the building's basement, is filled with body parts, freaks and other items that make up this year's theme, "The Haunted Prison."
"We really look forward to hosting the Haunted House each year, because we get so much out of it," said Jaycees Chairman Michael White.
"We are so thankful to American Tobacco for letting us use their spooky basement space and to all the other countless businesses and individuals who dedicate time or money to help us with this," he continued. "It's something that helps the community, but also helps our members develop as individuals."
With representatives from the Durham Police Reserves assisting each night, the Haunted House also provides a safe venue for Halloween celebrations, says member Brooke Christian.
"We would love to have everyone come out to enjoy a fun and safe Halloween with us, while helping out the Durham community," she said.
Tickets are $7 at the door, but tonight, attendees can receive $1 off if they wear items supporting Duke or UNC. Athletes from both schools will be helping out at the haunted house. Today's proceeds will benefit charities chosen by both schools.
A $2 discount is available to those who bring in-kind donations: new or gently used linens on Thursday for Urban Ministries, tape measures for Habitat for Humanity of Durham on Friday and canned dog food for the Animal Protection Society of Durham on Saturday.
For an extra $2, you can purchase a raffle ticket to win gift certificates for local restaurants or sports memorabilia from Duke or UNC.
Over the past two years, the haunted house has provided over $20,000 to local groups, including Triangle Residential Options for Substance Abusers, PharmASSIST, the Ronald McDonald House, the Durham Crisis Response Center, CrimeStoppers, the John Avery Boys and Girls Club and Meals on Wheels.
The haunted house is open today through Saturday from 6:45 to 11 p.m. Go to
