Turtle rescuer Maura Nowalk, a Duke student in the Nicholas School of the Environment, frees a mid-sized turtle from a net trap in the muck of a small pond being drained last month on the north end of Sarah P. Duke Gardens at Duke University. Several students with the Nicholas School waded around in the muck of the draining pond to catch and transplant the turtles they found to another pond nearby. Several turtles and at least one crayfish were rescued in the first hour of the search.
