The Rev. Denton Lotz, General Secretary of the Baptist World Alliance since 1988, will preach at the 11 a.m. worship service at Hope Valley Baptist Church on Sunday.

The Baptist World Alliance is a fellowship of 80 million Baptists in more than 214 conventions worldwide. The Alliance leads in evangelism, responds to people in need and defends human rights. Lotz promotes the work of the BWA through correspondence and travel and serves as the official representative of the Alliance to meetings of Baptist bodies and other Christian groups. He also represents the BWA to world governments and other international bodies.

Hope Valley is designated as a BWA Global Impact Church, having contributed more than $1,000 per year to the work of the Alliance. Senior pastor, the Rev. Lloyd V. Braswell, and two members of the congregation attended the BWA Centennial Congress in England earlier this year.

Hope Valley is located at 6900 Garrett Road.

Church announces special services

Special services have been announced for Sept. 17-20 at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 2700 Roxboro Road.

* Sept. 17: Dinner at 6 p.m., followed by a service at 7 p.m. The speaker will be the Rev. Jerry Mitchell, and special music will be presented by the choir from Duke's Chapel United Methodist:

* Sept. 18: Service at 7 p.m. The Rev. Joey Shelton will speak, and the Rev. Connie Shelton will provide special music.

* Sept. 19: Service at 7 p.m. The Rev. Connie Shelton will speak. Special music will be a favorite hymn sing-along.

* Sept. 20: Dessert fellowship at 6 p.m., followed by a service at 7 p.m. The Rev. Belton Joyner will speak, and the contemporary Christian group "Gone Fishing'" will provide special music.

This weekend, the church is hosting a Weekend Adventure for children from 4 years old through grade six. The adventure will begin today at 9 a.m. and continue until 3 p.m. Learning and sharing opportunities, class activities, music, crafts, recreation and movies are on the schedule.

Free haircuts offered for needy children

Pastor Rodney Green of Changing a Generation ministry announced this week that free haircuts for needy students will be available on Mondays at 4 p.m. at 603 Holloway St., ministry headquarters.

A volunteer barber will be on site each week, he said.

Church series proclaims peace in lives

Calvary United Methodist and Triangle Fellowship of Reconciliation (FOR) will host a four-week series, "A Non-Violent Training Sampler," beginning Thursday.

The sessions will explore the dynamics of violence, as well as how to live a more peaceful life.

Sessions will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on four consecutive Thursdays, Sept. 14, 21, 28 and Oct. 5 at Calvary United Methodist, 304 E. Trinity at Elizabeth Street in Old North Durham. Registration is free. Those attending will be asked for a donation to defray the cost of the event.

Co-facilitators for the event are Lib Hutchby, trainer, and Rick Rocchetti, director, of Triangle FOR. To register contact Rocchetti at Rick8357@cs.com.

Horton Road Church to hold September revival

Horton Road Original Free Will Baptist Church, 1315 Horton Road, will hold revival services Sept. 17-22. The Rev. Karl Sexton, pastor of Gateway Free Will Baptist in Virginia Beach, Va., is the speaker.

Services will begin at 6 p.m. on Sept. 17 and will continue each night of the week at 7:30 p.m.

The Women in Action at the church are holding a spaghetti dinner today from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Plates include spaghetti, salad, bread and dessert and are available to eat in or take out. The cost is $7 for ages 13 and up and $4 for children ages 3 to 12. Children 2 and under can eat free with the purchase of another plate.
